The Old West is a significant part of the American heritage; the era marks not only the growth of a seemingly young nation but also the changes in its legal system. This became the backbone for thousands of pioneers whose dreams and character ultimately tamed this area and made America what it is today.
It’s a tough job but someone’s got to do it. These words relate to tasks that were uncommon and often considered dangerous for those who are not qualified. These types of profession require skills from a special breed of men who are not afraid to risk their lives and accept the hardships that goes with it. Back in the 1800s it was a small town in Kansas City where the job of the Brothel Inspector became known.
BRIEF HISTORY
In those days Kansas City is a symbol of a fast developing frontier town due to it’s proximity
to the cross roads and the rail lines of the time. Here people from all walks of life such as farmers, cowboys, frontiersmen and city folks from the eastern part of the United States, usually made their stops before they continue with their journeys westward.
With the multitude of travelers especially men converging in this area, many bars, gambling casinos and brothels have sprung up to provide some rest and recreation to lonely visitors. Also it is quite common that many of these establishments legal or not were more than tolerated by city officials.
Because of the sudden increase in the number of brothels commonly referred to as “Sporting Houses” or” Cribs,” the demand for women willing to provide companionship to these amorous cowpokes escalated as well. In view of these changes local city officials needed a system of supervision to regulate the particular activities in this area. Thus creating a special unit called the Brothel Inspection Division.
The main task of these agents is to make sure that the girls have a safe and clean environment to work and that everything was on the up and up. Also the City of Kansas designated other functions for this group to uphold the City’s Ordinances and provide necessary assistance to other local law enforcement agencies.
DUTIES OF A BROTHEL INSPECTOR
- Police Power – One of their tasks is to provide a peaceful working environment to the women and their patrons. Removing any rowdy characters in the premises, discouraging thievery from the prostitutes and disallowing rigged gambling games.
- Licensing – Inspectors should make sure establishments and their employees’ posses the appropriate licenses and permits.
- Health Inspector – Ensure that prostitutes or “soiled doves” are checked regularly by a doctor making sure that they are free from any type of diseases. Kansas City officials view this as an act of patriotism for without health inspections, those infected could jeopardize the lives of a large number of American males destined to build a young country.
- Tax Collection – As far as taxes are concerned Madams are required to allot a portion of their profit on a nightly basis. This will in turn renew their licenses.
There are no records of any Brothel Inspector ever becoming famous. This is due to the nature of their job which focuses mainly on surveillance work rather than engaging in gun fights with outlaws or helping out to win the west. Their adventures are mostly indoors that no one would ever bother recording it. It is possible however that Inspectors had the best chance to get complementary affections from the ladies from time to time.
THE MODERN INSPECTORS
Today becoming a Brothel Inspector can be considered a good career opportunity. A private investigation company in Australia is offering £50 000 or $70,000 
a year to work undercover, not bad especially if the job requires you to “ta
ke part in sexual services.” Applicants should be single with a private investigators license with an awareness of occupational health and safety and good command of spoken and written English. Candidates should be willing to engage in protected sex with prostitutes and provide a sworn statement as part of the requirement. It also involves visiting suspected illegal brothels and gathering evidence.
Given all the good points on becoming a Brothel Inspector, the are also disadvantages of being one. This includes the ever present danger from powerful lawless elements that operates these illegal establishments. Also having sex with prostitutes even protected can still pose as a health risk. But however dangerous this job is still there are those special breed of men who are more than often willing to take these risks.
